Tony Strange - Lead Vocalist & Guitarist

Tony started his singing career at the age of 16, as the lead singer of Cliff Richard and the Shadows cover band, The Ramblers; resident band at Wroughton Scout Hut. Four years later he formed The Tempos, a five piece covers band, performing rock & roll, pop songs and ballads of the 50s and 60s. The band was at the heart of the Swindon dance scene throughout the 60s, playing at venues such as the Locarno, McIlroys, Swindon Town Football Supporter’s Club and many local clubs including Walcot British Legion and Purton Working Men’s Club.

In 1971, Tony left the band to turn professional, moving to Leeds to pursue his solo career. Tony forged a successful career performing cabaret in variety clubs, theatres, nightclubs, holiday camps, working men’s and social clubs in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. He also enjoyed working trips to America and Sicily. In 1991, Tony returned to Swindon, working as a solo artist for a further 15 years. He was a regular at many local clubs including New Century, Gorse Hill, Wroughton & Rodbourne Cheney Working Men's Clubs.

In 2005, Tony’s career turned full circle, when he joined rock & roll and dance band, Cyril York, performing in many of the Swindon clubs he had played in the 60s. Two years later, Nitelife the Band was formed with Adrian Matthews (keyboards) and John Griffiths (drums). The trio had a successful and enjoyable three years working in venues across the south

of England. In 2011, Tony’s 50th year in show business, Nitelife became a duo, when John left amicably to pursue other interests. Tony and Adrian continue to provide a similar programme, with emphasis on rock & roll, 50s, 60s & 70s pop music and ballads.

By day, Tony works for Michael’s Tailoring, a long established Swindon company which provides a tailoring service to local businesses and army camps. Father to Maria, Nikki and Maddie, Tony also has four granddaughters, Kiera (16) and Lily-Ann (6), Lexi (3) and Kaci (1). Talented singers, Nikki and Kiera have often got up on stage to sing with the band, and Lily seems destined to play the drums - loudly! Maria secures bookings for Nitelife Duo, so it’s definitely a family business!
